How do you boost cookbook sales?

The women of Brookwood Covenant Church, in Topeka, recently hosted a tasting lunch featuring 17 recipes from the new church cookbook. Judy Rogers, who leads women ministry at Brookwood, said the lunch was open to everyone at church and it boosted cookbook sales.

This sounds like a great way to publicize a cookbook. Thanks for the tip, Judy.

Has your women's group published a cookbook? What worked and what didn't? Were sales as successful as you thought?

(She also said they worked with Morris Press and were pleased with the end result.)

OK, I'll be the first to add a comment. Our church (Clay Center Covenant, in Kansas) did a cookbook several years ago and we had a LOT of them left. Lately we've been including a cookbook in a basket we take to new attenders and they seem to appreciate it. It's a good way to introduce people to our church and use up cookbooks at the same time!

Hi, my name is Deb Garrett, Women Ministries Leader of the Pomeroy Evangelical Covenant Church near Pomeroy, IA. We have done what Clay Center Kansas has done, putting our cookbooks in welcoming baskets for new families visiting our church. This has been very well received. Also, a family that attends our church owns a christian bookstore and pharmacy about 12 miles from the church and they sell the cookbooks in their store for us. This has really boosted our cookbook sales. In fact, the cookbooks that we have tried to get rid of for the past ten years are now gone and we are looking at publishing a newer cookbook.

Several years ago, I compiled a cookbook for a couple of nephews getting married the same summer. I have since printed quite a few for friends and family. I find that each cookbook costs about $10.00 after printing, then cutting and binding at Kinko's. All this to say that before you decide to print and bind them yourself, make sure you can do it cost effectively to maximize your profits.

To share an idea... the women at our church are having a Christmas tea. Each woman is to bring a favorite holiday goodie along with the recipe. Those will eventually go into the church cookbook.
